Background Information

The CARE Registry™ data elements and definitions represent a comprehensive dataset that fulfills the goal of meeting the 2005 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS) determination decision related to carotid disease patients receiving carotid artery stenting procedures.

Data Definition Development Process
  • The process for developing the CARE Registry™ core dataset followed an established methodology for creating clinical data standards and included:
    • ranking carotid artery stenting and endarterectomy data elements and definitions,
    • gaining multispeciality physician consensus on the final data elements and definitions, and
    • conducting public review and comment.

  • The CARE Registry™ data elements have been derived from a national, multispecialty collaboration among carotid artery stenting and endarterectomy experts. The elements that are included in this dataset have been linked to the 2005 CMS Carotid Stent determination statement and specifically address the questions/hypotheses that CMS aims to answer by collecting carotid stent data.
