Background Information

The ICD RegistryTM data elements and definitions represent a comprehensive data set that fulfills the goal of meeting the recent Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS) coverage decision related to ICD.

Data Definition Development Process
  • The process for developing the ICD Registry™ core data set followed an established methodology for creating clinical data standards and included:
    • ranking of ICD data elements/definitions,
    • gaining consensus on final ICD data elements and definitions, and
    • public review and comment.

  • The ICD data elements have been derived from the ACC/AHA Key Data Elements and Definitions for Electrophysiological Studies and Procedures. Close attention was paid to the CMS coverage decision and the elements that are included in this data set have been linked to the current CMS ICD Implant Form and specifically address the questions/hypotheses that CMS aims to answer by collecting ICD data.

  • Importantly, the ICD elements have also been linked to the NCDR™ v3.0 CathPCI Registry™ to ensure consistency among the registries and to enhance ease of use for current NCDR™ participants.
