CONGRATULATIONS to our CARE Registry® participants! (posted: 08/25/08)
The NCDR® CARE Registry has reached a milestone achievement of 5,000 CAS procedures. Thanks to the dedication of our CARE Registry participants, this success will not only help guide optimal CAS patient management in everyday practice but also provide a potent research tool. A large amount of clinical information on thousands of patients permits focused analysis of clinical treatment details and efficacy of devices – the kind of focused analysis that is not possible with clinical trials.  Announcement Regarding NPI (posted: 01/02/08)
On January 1, 2008, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) will require an NPI (National Provider Identifier) to identify the primary providers (the billing and pay-to providers) in Medicare electronic and paper institutional claims. The ICD Registry will require mandatory population of the NPI data field for all patients discharged on or after January 1, 2008.

To enforce the mandatory collection and submission of NPI, the DQR threshold for the ICD Registry will be set at 100 percent for this field. For example: If a participant of the ICD Registry does not submit their NPI, they would fail the registry DQR and their data would not be included in the registry aggregate.

Effective January 1, 2008, Medicare fee-for-service claims received must include an NPI in the primary field on the claim (i.e., the billing and pay-to fields). As of this date, 837I electronic claims and UB04 paper claims without an NPI in fields identifying the primary provider (billing and pay-to) will be rejected.

CMS recently made available a document that will assist physicians and non-physician practitioners in completing form CMS-855I, Medicare Provider Enrollment Application – Physicians and Non-Physician Practitioners. This document contains several enrollment scenarios and indicates where the National Provider Identifier (NPI) is to be reported on form CMS-855I. It also indicates when CMS-855R and/or the CMS-855B need to be completed.

Need more information?
Not sure what an NPI is and how to get it, share it, and use it? Providers can apply for an NPI online, or can call the NPI enumerator to request a paper application at 1-800-465-3203.

Getting an NPI is free. Not having one can be costly.
